Learning Outcome #1
"Demonstrate an understanding of the history of communication and its artifacts by analyzing social movements, issues, and perspectives."
This outcome involves examining how communication methods, technologies, and artifacts influence societal changes and cultural dynamics. Through studying these aspects, Emerson students gain insights into communication's effects on attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors across communities and time periods. It underscores the link between historical and contemporary communication practices and their societal impact.
In my "History of Jazz" course, we explored how social movements shaped jazz and its communication through music. My final paper focused on the Civil Rights Movement's profound influence on jazz during the 1960s and beyond. I discussed how music serves as a form of expression and communication, both verbally and nonverbally, particularly during times of social upheaval. This assignment aligns with the learning outcome by analyzing how a social movement transformed communication practices of its time.
